Chapter Eighteen

Planet Lysara

Jungle, somewhere

Year of 2254, June

Xan froze and held out a hand to stop her. She did. Her guardians had trained her to respond without hesitation. His gaze softened with sadness as if he was saying farewell. He gave her such a sweet smile, incongruent with his usual reserved expressions. She frowned and scanned their surroundings. Is he in mortal danger? She took a step toward him and met solid muscle. Jokta held her. She glanced at him, then at Xan as he sank a foot into the sand. Quicksand?

She lunged for him, but Jokta yanked her back. No matter what she threw at him, kicks, punches, the male held firm. “Please.” She panted, clinging to his arms.

“Do not come closer, my Quin.” Xan’s intense gaze traveled over her as if he memorized her, believing he would never see her again. He withdrew his greatsword, his gaze lowering to his feet.

“It is a rare Gracc. Their large bodies lie under the ground surface awaiting a victim,” Eira said in a matter-of-fact tone.

She stared at him for the longest of moments, accessing the information Illan had shared with her. Graccs had no known weaknesses, and their bodies went meters under the surface. Shit.

“How much time does he have?” She struggled to breathe. Her heart thumped, banging against her ribcage. She lunged, gripped with the need to save him, to kiss him, to do something, anything, but Jokta didn’t budge.

“Not long,” he mumbled, his arms clamped around her.

“Are you telling me you’re just going to stand here and watch him...die?” Anger warred with desperation, and she shuddered before renewing the struggle for freedom.

“There is nothing we can do,” Jokta growled. “If you go to him, you will die too.”

What? She blinked. “But I have a rope. Xan, can’t we pull you out?”

“Its teeth are directed inward, you pull, and it will shred me.” Gripping the hilt of his greatsword with one hand, Xan unhooked her bag and tossed it aside. He spun his sword and held it like he planned to plunge it into the ground.

Biological diagrams flashed in her mind showing the direction of a Gracc’s teeth with a bite force quotient somewhere in the four digits. It would paralyze him before digesting him over ten days. It had a flexible jaw, able to expand to a wider diameter to accommodate larger prey.

“But what if we make it think you’re bigger than you are? Would it release you then?” She scanned the clearing, searching for any markings, something to show her where its sensors hid.

“Yes. That may work,” Nuos said with a calculating smile. “If we position ourselves and stimulate along its sensors it may just open its mouth wider...”

“And I am swallowed sooner?” Xan snapped. “I do not like this plan.”

“Dying’s a bad plan no matter what. Standing there and doing nothing to stop it is the dumbest idea.” She threw out a hand. “Let me try, Xan. I...I can’t bear to just stand by and...lose you.”

He gave her a small nod, muttering something.
